Let's Talk About
Sleep Disordered Breathing
Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) is a spectrum of sleep disorders that involve compromised breathing during sleep. The Spectrum of SDB begins with Mouth Breathing and progresses in severity to include Snoring, Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

When the tongue rests on the floor of the mouth due to mouth breathing, low tongue tone or a tongue tie, the tongue is likely to fall back into the airway during sleep. The Tongue narrows or obstructs the airway space, resulting in Sleep Disordered Breathing.

Through Myofunctional Therapy, we work to improve nasal breathing and correct tongue resting posture. We also work to improve tone and control of the muscles of the upper airway, helping to keep the airway open through the day and overnight while sleeping.

Treating Sleep Disordered Breathing often requires a combination of interventions which can include:
- A CPAP Machine
- A Night Time Sleep Appliance
- Orthodontic Treatment
- Tongue Tie Release
Myofunctional Therapy is an important piece of the puzzle, to be used in combination with any and all of these interventions.
